Act of Duty
Airs Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 10 am

PBS 45 & 49's Act of Duty talks with more than a dozen northeast Ohio men and women who share their first-hand experience of battle and how it has shaped their lives. The one-hour program is structured in four segments: Segment 1 covers who is a veteran, the Civil War and Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day); Segment 2 starts with World War I and includes information about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Armistice Day, the predecessor of Veterans Day; Segment 3 covers World War II and Korea; and Segment 4 covers Vietnam and the Gulf War. Democracy Revealed: Akron's Political Life

Heart of a Nation: America's First Ladies

This documentary looks at the important roles played by America's first ladies. Using the National First Ladies' Library in Canton as its primary resource, the special recalls important moments in first lady history.

 

Sharing Democracy: The Akron/Serbian Partnership

WKSU's Vincent Duffy takes viewers behind the scenes of the Akron-Subotica Partnership. Subotica is among many Serbian cities working to develop a democratic form of government and rebuild their economy. In November 2001, representatives from Subotica toured Akron's landfill and water purification plants. Their visit followed a similar trip by Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, when he visited two Serbian cities.

Lasting Impressions: The Wendell August Forge Story

Wendell August Forge is the only remaining survivor of what was once a flourishing industry. In 1955, more than 100 companies made hand-hammered aluminum commemorative items, yet only Wendell August Forge remains in business today. Based in Grove City, Pennsylvania, this forge specializes in handcrafted metal gifts made in hand-hammered metals. Meet the men and women who pound out their living in the forge.

 

A Simple Life

Holmes County, Ohio, is the center of the world's largest Amish population and a place where two worlds -- contemporary American society and traditional Amish living -- converge. Main Street America

Fifty years ago, downtown Akron was the thriving center of an industrial city, supporting a mix of small businesses, residents and industry. But like many American Main Streets, downtown Akron's slowly slid into a collection of failed businesses and abandoned buildings. A number of "revitalization" plans have been proposed over the years. But why bother with renewal at all? What does a strong Main Street mean to a city and its residents? Whose interests are met through revitalization? And why is it so difficult to achieve?
