12:30PM Mister Rogers' Neighborhood

Monday, Feb. 28
You and I Together: Mister Rogers visits with Ben Adelman, a teenager who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Together they see how people install a wheelchair lift in his family's van. The Neighborhood of Make-Believe story addresses one of children's concerns about wheelchairs, reassuring them that no one can "catch" a disability from sitting in a wheelchair.

Tuesday, March 1
You and I Together: At the invitation of The Gorilla Foundation, Mister Rogers visits with Koko, the live gorilla who has learned from her teacher, Dr. Penny Patterson, how to communicate in sign language. There's a different kind of gorilla in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe story. The "make believe" gorilla seems scary to some, but not to those who take the time to get to know him. He even enjoys playing with a ball. Later on, in Mister Rogers' house, Mr. McFeely brings a video showing how people make plastic play balls.

Wednesday, March 2
You and I Together: Optometrist Dr. Bernard Mallinger examines Mister Rogers' eyes. Later on, Mr. McFeely brings a video showing how people make eye glass lenses. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, the make believe gorilla is helpful when Betty Aberlin trips and gets hurt but it doesn't look that way to those who are still scared of him.

Thursday, March 3
You and I Together: To help children know you can understand something better if you take the time to get to know it, Mister Rogers shows his viewers a book about looking closely. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Lady Elaine is trying to trap the gorilla in a net. The others who got to know him try to calm her and plead with her to see beyond her fears.

Friday, March 4
You and I Together: After reading a book about a dog named Zak, Mister Rogers visits with Trey Glauser, a teenager with brittle bone disease who gets a lot of help from his wheelchair and his service dog. There's also a video visit to the Center for Creative Play, a toy library where children of all abilities can play. In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, the neighbors find out who the "make believe" gorilla really is and learn that it's with our hearts (and not just our eyes) that we get to know someone.
