Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will all children who enter be recognized?
A: Yes. Every child who enters will receive a certificate of achievement signed by LeVar Burton, host of Reading Rainbow.

Q: Must the spelling and grammar be perfectly correct?
A: No. Students originality in plot, ideas and expression is most important.

Q: May the students write about stories from their lives?
A: Yes. In general, we write best about the things we know best. Students life experiences are a rich source of stories.

Q: Do the story and illustrations have to fit exactly within the word and picture limits?
A: Students need to abide by the minimum and maximum word counts. Students must also include a minimum of 5 illustrations with the story.

Q: Will entries be returned?
A: No. We recommend photo-copying your entry before sending. Send your original work and keep the copy for yourselves. (Color copying works well.) The original must be submitted for the contest.

Q: What is the contest entry DEADLINE?
A: Entries must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Send your completed entry, including your entry form, to:

Q: When will winners be announced?
A: Winners will be announced on Saturday, March 19 at 11:30 am at Summit Mall in Akron as part of the PBS 45 & 49 Family Expo. The Family Expo features PBS Kids characters in a live stage performance presented three times that day, and all-day hands-on fun throughout the mall. The event is sponsored by PBS 45 & 49, Summit Mall and Children Services of Summit County.

PBS 45 & 49 will also announce winners on air on Monday, March 21 at 10:55 am & 11:25 am, immediately before and after the broadcast of Reading Rainbow. Winners will be notified by phone and mail as well. Winners will be announced in editions of the stations? two newsletters, The Ones to Grow On and TechKnowledgy Newletter, and in the monthly program guide, The Alternative.
