4:00 The Wind of Change: The End of Colonialism in Africa

In 1957, Ghana would become the first country to challenge the colonial order by gaining independence from Britain. Emboldened by Ghanas success, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghanas first leader, launched his campaign for the complete independence of the African continent. Between 1958 and 1964, 26 African nations gained their freedom from colonial rule. But this rising optimism would soon fade, as Cold War rivalries broke out across the continent. This documentary chronicles the chaotic impact of decolonization in Ghana, Guinea and the Congo. Within a week of independence in June 1960, the Congo would split into three factions, backed by the United States, the Soviet Union and Belgium, with United Nations peacekeeping forces in the middle. For Guinea and Ghana, the outcome was not much better. Nkrumah was eventually overthrown, and Guineas Sekou Toure would face economic isolation.

4:00 American Experience

"Streamliners: Americas Lost Trains" On the morning of May 26, 1934, a shimmering silver locomotive pulled out of Denvers Union Station bound for Chicago. The Zephyr was unlike any train seen before. Known as a streamliner for its long, sleek look and powered by a revolutionary compact diesel engine, it could cover 1,015 miles in a record 15 hours. By the 1940s, fleets of streamliners crisscrossed the country, making the U.S. passenger rail system the envy of the world. But within two decades, the era of these supertrains was over, dozens of routes were discontinued and the cars sold off to Canada and Japan. The dramatic story of the streamliners is one of remarkable achievements and opportunities lost. TVG

2:00 Secrets of the Dead

"Mystery of the Black Death" Not everyone who came in contact with the Black Plague bacteria, which ravaged medieval Europe, died. Geneticist Steven OBrien is trying to find out why some survived when so many others perished. His investigation takes him to a little town in England that was hit by the plague in 1665. Using historical records, town archives and modern forensic techniques, OBrien turns the town into a medical case study that reveals some startling information about the disease. After proving that the scourge in the town really was plague and not some other disease, he discovers that the people who managed to survive were blessed with a genetic mutation that made them immune to the effects of the bacteria. Even more startling, that same genetic mutation has now been proven to give some people immunity to the most deadly disease of the modern age AIDS. This program tells the story of the survivors of the devastating plague and takes viewers on a journey of investigation into the world of a deadly pandemic. (R-Today at 5 am) TVPG

3:00 P.O.V.

"Soldados: Chicanos in Viet Nam/The Sixth Section" Based on the 1991 American Book Award winner of the same name, Viet Nam War veteran Charley Trujillo and producer Sonya Rhee's "Soldados" recounts the harrowing experiences of a generation of Mexican-American boys who fought in Viet Nam. Raised in the San Joaquin Valley of California, they took their first journey away from their rural hometown to the war-torn rice paddies of Viet Nam. Profoundly changed by the experience, the soldados returned with a new conception of themselves and their country and of the particular challenges facing them as Chicanos. "The Sixth Section" opens a surprising window on immigration in the 21st century. Following a group of Mexican immigrants from the tiny desert town of Boqueron who now work in upstate New York, the film documents their struggle to support themselves and their hometown 2,000 miles to the south.  To do this, the men form a 'union' that raises money in the form of weekly donations of $10 or $20 from each of its members in New York. In the past few years the group has brought electricity, an ambulance and, most dramatically, a 2,000-seat baseball stadium to Boqueron.
