Dock Be Gone!
You can opt to hide the dock if you find it gets in your way. Click the dock to the left or right of the divider and hold the mouse button until a menu pops up. Select Turn Hiding On, and the dock will disappear. You can interact with the dock at any time simply by dragging the mouse to the bottom of the display. The dock will slide up, allowing you to make a selection. Once you drag the mouse off the dock, however, it disappear. Source: macHOME online newsletter, www.machome.com.

Safely Remove Hardware Icon?

Mac users, always drag the icon of a USB device to the Eject button in the Dock. Windows users, if a USB device is attached to your system, you will notice an icon in the Notification area, which ? when clicked ? will give you the option to stop your hardware before you unplug it. It is always a good policy to do this when removing a device, especially one that has a directory such as a digital camera memory disk.

You should use the digital camera to format those memory cards rather than your Mac or PC.
