X-Rated Tips
(That's X as in OS X)

By Ralph Tolbert, Educational Technology Consultant ()

Get Final Cut Express for only $49!

Teachers that received a free copy of Jaguar OS X are eligible to purchase Final Cut Express for $49 $200 off the regular price for educators. Check your e-mail from Apple for this special offer and buy that Christmas present before Dec. 27, when the offer expires. Final Cut Express is an advanced DV editing tool for videomakers.

Developing PhotoShop skills

Would you like to learn the steps necessary to use PhotoShop, or for teachers PhotoShop Elements, to clean up old, stained, wrinkled and spotted photos or the steps necessary to put PowerPoint slides into iMovie? Then move that mouse over this link at http://www.creativemac.com to check out the tutorials.

Blocking student access

As the administrator in OS X, you may want to use the Terminal or NetInfo Manager, but do you want students to access these programs? Of course not. So move them from the Utilities folder found in the Applications folder to any location in your home folder. You can still access the programs but the students will not have that privilege.

Gifts for the Mac lover

As the giving season approaches, what can you find for the Mac lovers in your life to avoid being the Grinch in their lives? Items below were listed in MacAddict, December 2003:

  • For the video enthusiast, a three-pack of DVD+R that looks like a film reel. $9.99, www.verbatim.com.
  • For the person with a few too many USB devices, a tiny semi-self-powered three-port hub. $27.95, www.drbott.com.
  • For the person with the most music downloads, a set of blue, green, violet and pink CDs that look like old vinyl records. $10.60, www.verbatim.com.
  • My personal recommendation is a subscription to MacAddict. A worthwhile investment for keeping up with Mac stuff and how to use it.
