The History Circle of PBS 45 & 49

If you teach history or social studies or have an interest in history, join The History Circle of PBS 45 & 49!

We're extending the borders of our prime time broadcasts into off-the-air explorations of the history programming you watch on PBS 45 & 49. The History Circle will expand your enjoyment of our programs, help you pursue additional knowledge and explore new ideas, and even meet people with similar interests. At regular History Circle public events, we'll bring filmmakers and experts to the area and continue the conversation that begins with the broadcasts.

Join us for adventures in history!

Membership in The History Circle is free. When you join, you'll receive free newsletters, e-mailed to you at least twice a month to keep you up-to-date on our history programming and our special events. We're also planning public events, mostly free, that tie in to high-visibility national and local productions. These events will include "meet-the-expert" and "meet-the-filmmaker" opportunities and preview screenings of key programs.

Upcoming Events

You'll find that our "History Circle" often encompasses other areas, like science, technology, biography and drama, occasionally nature and music, and sometimes even food! Two upcoming special events fit the bill.

PBS 45 & 49, through the generous support of Kempthorn Motors in Canton and Stadium Volkswagen in Youngstown, are hosting free preview screenings of Martin Scorcese's The Blues in Youngstown and Akron. The blues are the foundation on which much of contemporary music rests, from country to rock'n'roll to hip-hop. The Blues goes to the roots of our American musical heritage. For more information about the screenings, check out our Web site at pbs4549.org/EVENTS.HTM.

Thanks to The Repository in Canton and DeVitis Italian Food & Produce in Akron, we're hosting a special dinner with Ciao Italia's Mary Ann Esposito at Alberini's Restaurant in Niles on Oct. 8. Think we're pushing the history connection too far? We're not! Mary Ann has a special interest in the history of Italian cuisine, wrote her master's thesis on Italian Renaissance cooking and brings all that background to bear as our dinner tour guide, sharing the history behind the recipes we're enjoying. For more information about our dinner, called Una Notte a Toscano, check out our Web site at pbs4549.org/EVENTS.HTM.
