Learning From a Distance With the Akron Zoo

by Candace Bates, Education Curator, Akron Zoo

Have you ever wanted to go behind-the-scenes at the Akron Zoo? Now you can without leaving your school or library. For the first time ever, the Akron Zoo is offering distance learning programs -- live video teleconferences broadcast from exhibits around the zoo.

Thanks in large part to a generous grant from Ohio SchoolNet, the Education Department at the Akron Zoo has developed four programs that connect schools anywhere in the world to the Akron Zoo. By using special equipment now available to most public schools in Ohio, students can experience the wonder of the zoo from their own classrooms and media centers.

For students in grades 2-4, the Zoo offers "Living Things"; for students in grades 4-6 "Endangered Species," "Animal Adaptations" and "Genetics and Change." High school students participating in these distance-learning classes will act as zoo professionals and develop plans for conservation of endangered species.

Distance learning is a growing part of the curriculum for schools in the state of Ohio. Many K-12 classrooms now have access to this amazing technology. The Akron Zoo is committed to being an integral part of science and environmental education in Summit County. This program is one that is turning goals and dreams into reality.

Perhaps the best part for Ohio public schools that have access to distance learning through SchoolNet is that they receive these programs free of charge. There is a fee of $75 (plus any associated line charges) for other schools, including private schools and schools outside the state. If you have any questions about distance learning, or you would like to schedule a program, please contact the Akron Zoo's Education Department at .
