Technology Teachers of the Year

by David Benson, Educational Technology Consultant ()

We would like to recognize two teachers in our region: Eric Van Raepenbusch of Coventry Local School District and Charlene Koberna of Hudson City Schools. Eric and Charlene were among the 16 finalists to be selected from all the teachers nominated across Ohio vying for the title of Ohio Technology Teacher of the Year. The state's top honor went to Eric.

Eric, known as Mr. V. to his students, is a special education teacher who was nominated for developing the Wearable Computer Project, a project in which his students have access to a five-pound, fully functioning Windows-based computer that can be worn on the belt or in a backpack. The computers are equipped with various assistive devices and software that help his students in the learning process. In his nomination letter, it was noted that Eric uses technology in a way that breaks down the barriers his students face each and every day.

Charlene was nominated for her work in co-developing and maintaining a web site integrated with the 8th-grade American history curriculum. On the web site students can access assignments, guided learning units and criteria (rubrics/checklists) for class preparation, class projects and links to teacher-selected web sites.
