Looking for a complete package of classroom activities to use for Veterans Day? Check out PBS 45 & 49's Act of Duty television special, Web site and teachers guide. The one-hour Act of Duty will be block-fed on Friday, Nov. 2 at 5 am and broadcast on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 10 pm.

PBS 45 & 49's Act of Duty talks with more than a dozen northeast Ohio men and women who share their first-hand experience of battle and how it has shaped their lives. CNN's Martin Savidge provides the narration for this enlightening look into the lives of U.S. veterans. Against a backdrop of footage featuring scenes of war, airplanes, naval vessels, veterans' cemeteries and newspaper headlines, those who served explain their roles both during and after war. The program also features an interview with Retired General Norman Schwarzkopf.

Act of Duty is structured in four segments: Segment 1 covers who is a veteran, the Civil War and Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day); Segment 2 starts with World War I and includes information about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Armistice Day, the predecessor of Veterans Day; Segment 3 covers World War II and Korea; and Segment 4 covers Vietnam and the Gulf War.

The Web site at http://wneo.org/actofduty features extensive lesson plans on Veterans Day, Memorial Day and major wars in U.S. history (Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War) and hotlists on war monuments and topics of interest (e.g., The Holocaust, Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb, Women in the War, African Americans in the War and Chemical Warfare).
