Putting pictures and clip art in documents

By Ria Mastromatteo, Educational Technology Consultant

Ever insert clip art or pictures into a page and, try as you might, you can't get it to go where you want? Here are some solutions:

To get a picture from the Internet for PC and Mac users:

1. Find the picture you want to use from the Internet.

2. Hold down the mouse button (Mac) or rightclick (PC) on the picture you want to use.

3. Select "Save image as" or "Save picture as"

4. When you get the dialogue box, type in the file name you want to use. Remember not to delete "gif" or "jpg" from the name when you save it.

5. Be sure you know where you want to store it on a floppy, the desktop or the hard drive.

For Microsoft Word (PC or Mac)

To put the picture into your document:

1. Go to Insert and select Picture and then From File.

2. Select the picture you want from wherever you saved it.

3. The picture will be placed on your screen.

To move the picture where you want it:

1. Make sure you have your Picture Tool Bar showing. If it is not showing, go to View, select Toolbars and then put a check by Picture.

2. Highlight the picture.

3. From the Picture Toolbar, select the icon that is a rectangle with a dog (or a diamond in Office 97) in it.

4. Select None, Behind Text or In Front of Text.

5. If these are not available, select Edit Wrap Points. Then select the icon again and select your choice.

6. To move your picture, put your cursor on the picture and move the cursor until you get crossed arrows. Then drag the picture where you want to place it.

For ClarisWorks or AppleWorks

To put a picture into your document AND be able to put it where you want it:

1. When the word processor is open, go to Window and select Show Tools.

2. Make sure the arrow at the top left of the drawing tools is selected. (This brings your picture in as an image, not as text.)

3. Select either Show Clippings (or Library) or Insert if your picture is from the Internet. Then double click or click on Insert

4. To move your picture, put your cursor on the picture and move the cursor until you get the crossed arrows. Then drag the picture where you want it.

Just one more thing: If you're going to publish material that contains art from the Internet, don't forget to credit the site where you found it.
