New Instructional Television Programs

PBS 45 & 49's Instructional Television (ITV) broadcast year begins Monday, Sept. 17, 2001 and runs through May 10, 2002. ITV programs will air Monday through Friday from 10 am to 11 am and 1 pm to 2 pm. Block feeds will air Monday through Friday from 4 am to 6 am. You should have your PBS 45 & 49 ITV Handbook by Sept. 13, which lists all of the programs on our air and in our Videotape Library. Here are the new programs:

The Biology of Small Life
Four 20-minute lessons; Grades 8-12; Science, Biology

Broadcasts
Tuesdays at 10:30 am, Sept. 18-Oct. 9
Fridays at 10:30 am, Sept. 21-Oct. 19
Tuesdays at 10:30 am, April 16-May 7

Block Feeds

This four-part series is an extension of The Biology Of. The following programs join the rest of the series: Annelids, Mollusks, Echinoderms and Flatworms.

 

Hands-On Crafts for Kids: Crafts Around the Earth
Thirteen 30-minute lessons; Grades 2-6; Art, Crafts, Social Studies

Crafts Around the Earth visits the habitats of the world and helps plant the seeds of creativity. Each program covers a different habitat of the world: the outback, the rain forest, endangered Earth, the garden, the desert, the farm, the forest, the tropics, the beach, the top and bottom of the world and the coral reef. The programs explore these habitats through crafts.

This series helps students understand how television news programs are put together. Go behind the scenes to see how news sets and productions are constructed to make the news more believable.

 

My Beautiful House
Thirty 7-minute lessons; Grades K-6; Social Studies, World Geography, Cultures

Each program shows us the structure, organization, food preparation, sleeping arrangements, clothing and family relationships within homes. Children from around the world educate young viewers about similarities and differences among cultures.

 

Road to College 2002
One 60-minute lesson; Grades 11-12; Guidance

Designed for high school students and their parents, Road to College 2002 is an hour-long program about the entire college application process. Areas covered in the program include making the decision to go to college; selecting the right college; filling out college applications; taking the SAT test; fulfilling college essay requirements; participating in college interviews; applying for financial aid; filling out FASFA forms; seeking federal grants; winning scholarships; and applying for college loans.

 

Sew Young, Sew Fun
Thirteen 30-minute lessons; Grades 5-12; Consumer and Family Sciences

Smart educators know that sewing education is more than a domestic skill. A university study of children who sew revealed heightened levels of creativity. Sew Young, Sew Fun is the first and only television series designed to stimulate the young creative spirit through sewing. Thirteen easy sewing projects develop sewing skills. The projects offer a fun yet educational approach by using hands-on activities. The use of other skills reading, math and more are used to complete each project.

Through visits to northeast Ohio art museums and schools and conversations with local artists, Sharing Art demonstrates real-world applications of the techniques taught in middle and high school art classes. Each week, students learn about a piece of art in a museum, which is followed by a local artist explaining how he/she does comparable art. Students then follow up in the classroom by creating a similar work.

 

For Veterans Day Education

Act of Duty

PBS 45 & 49's Act of Duty talks with more than a dozen northeast Ohio men and women who share their first-hand experience of battle and how it has shaped their lives. This enlightening look into the lives of U.S. veterans is shared against a backdrop of footage featuring scenes of war, airplanes, naval vessels, veterans' cemeteries and newspaper headlines.

 

America's Veterans
One 24-minute lesson; Grades 2-9; Social Studies, History

America's Veterans explore several critical dimensions of the question, "What does Veterans Day mean to you?" Who are veterans? How and why do we honor them? What can we learn from the lives of veterans? What are the responsibilities of citizenship?

Ohio Partners in Character Education
One 30-minute lesson

This 30-minute special defines and makes the case for character education. Various methods of integrating character education into the school curriculum are shown, and the benefits of including a character education program are discussed.
