A revival of the Users Group

By Dirk Fischer, Educational Technology Consultant

Remember the days when you could count on one hand the number of people you knew who owned a computer? Remember how you would get together and share your ideas on what to do with them? Remember Users Groups?

Well, I would like to revive the users group concept only focused on video rather than computers (although the two actually go together now).

I'm talking sit-down, face-to-face meetings at least two each year. The location could change to give us a chance to see each other's facilities. There would also be an e-mail list or a Web-based discussion area for sharing hard-earned knowledge. But the meetings I feel are important. Besides, it's fun to see what gear other people use and to share tips and techniques.

I'd like to start out as "teacher only," although the possibility of adding students will be high on the agenda. Maybe everyone will want to start out with students. You tell me.

I'll start the ball rolling by hosting the first meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 4 pm to 6 pm at our PBS 45 & 49 facility in Kent. I'll even give everyone a tour of our new digital master control studio.
