Ohio Veterans Plaza is a tribute to the more than 1.1 million veterans in Ohio. The Ohio Veterans Plaza, completed in 1998, is the first memorial built on Ohio Capitol grounds in nearly 70 years. Two ten-foot by 40-foot limestone walls with etchings of letters veterans had written home to their families, friends and loved ones are the highlight of the plaza. It is the first memorial to tell the story of military service in the soldiers' own words.
The program chronicles the 17-year history of the plaza and offers reflections of military service and sacrifice expressed in poignant letters. Some interesting segments include the story behind the Vietnam painting that sparked the plaza's evolution, a tour of how the 70 limestone letters were created, and coverage of the dedication of the monument.
