Math Monsters, developed in cooperation with the National Council of Teachers of Math (NCTM), is designed to meet and support national standards for K-2 math instruction. While individual programs focus on what is called "A Big Idea" (data collection, patterns, measurement, etc.), at least four of these standards are interwoven into every show: problem-solving, mathematical connections, mathematical communication and reasoning.
Math Monsters can also be used as "stand-alone" programs. They are designed to be used as support material for the classroom teacher. The series comes with a teachers guide that includes pre- and post-viewing activities. "Pause points" in each program allow teachers to stop the program (if pre-recorded) and involve students in discussion about problem-solving strategies. An Internet component is also available.
