America's Veterans and its teachers guide explore several critical dimensions of the question, "What does Veterans Day mean to you?"
Who are veterans? How and why do we honor them? What can we learn from the lives of veterans? What are the rights and responsibilities of citizenship? This documentary complements and enriches the treatment of Veterans Day found in most American history textbooks. In addition, the program and guide activities contribute substantially to students' attainment of the Roles of the Citizen in American Democracy standard of the National Standards for Civics and Government, published by the Center for Civic Education.
After viewing the video and participating in the activities suggested in the guide, students will be able to: 1) describe who veterans are, what they have done and why they should be honored; 2) appreciate the role played by veterans in a free society; and 3) explain why certain rights and responsibilities are important to them and to their family, community, state and nation.
